Atticus Gallery is pleased to present Refraction Index: 1.52, the UK solo debut of Suzanna Voit, a sculptor known for her meticulously engineered illusions that blur the boundaries between material reality and visual perception.
Born in Kazakhstan and based between Russia and Europe, Voit studied at the Saint Petersburg Stieglitz State Academy of Art and Design, where she earned a BFA in sculpture. Her work is grounded in both classical sculptural training and a deep engagement with the optics of light, environmental psychology, and material illusion.
In Refraction Index: 1.52, Voit presents a series of large-scale glass sculptures that appear to be frozen in time—each one emulating the appearance of ice through a sophisticated light-responsive system built into the base of each work. The exhibition’s title references the standard refractive index of glass (1.52), anchoring the illusion in a precise scientific context.
The sculptures respond to the specific ambient conditions of the gallery, shifting visually throughout the day. By harnessing the refined behavior of light and its effect on human perception, Voit constructs hyperreal forms that challenge the viewer’s assumptions about solidity, temperature, and truth.
Through this exhibition, Voit expands her inquiry into how environments—physical and psychological—shape what we believe to be real, and how the elemental forces of light and matter can be orchestrated to manufacture emotional perception.
